34th Annual Conference

EMDS 2021

June 24-25

Macrophages and dendritic cells in infection and inflammation

The conference will take place online - 24-25 June 2021

Dear Colleagues

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 34th conference of the European Macrophage and Dendritic cell Society (EMDS) entitled Macrophages and dendritic cells in infection and inflammation: molecular mechanisms and roles in pathology. This is a virtual conference that will take place online on June 24-25, 2021 hosted by Aarhus University, Denmark.

During the past two decades, our understanding of innate immunology has undergone a true revolution. We have discovered pattern recognition receptors and learned the basic principles by which they function, including how recognition governs subsequent adaptive immune responses. In addition, we are now starting to understand how phenomena, such as epigenetics and metabolism, which have classically not received much attention in immunology, are central in many immunological processes. At the center of this immunological revolution are the macrophages and dendritic cells, which are involved in the sensing of danger, the orchestration of early immune responses, and the instruction of lymphocytes for immune responses appropriate for given challenges. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemics has further demonstrated the importance of in-depth knowledge on cellular and molecular immunology, when a new disease emerges. In this respect, it is worth mentioning that macrophage and dendritic biology is central for both the pathology of COVID-19 and the action of the efficient vaccines.

This meeting aims to bring together scientists in macrophage/dendritic cell research with adjoining fields of such as transcriptomics, infectious disease, and structural biology, to present and discuss cutting edge research in this broadening field. A key goal of the meeting is to promote communication between world class scientists and a young generation of researchers, ranging from molecular immunologists to clinical scientists, and thus to facilitate the translation of new basic discoveries.

The program is based on 6 scientific sessions in which 18 internationally renowned scientists speakers will present their latest cutting edge research findings. This will be complemented by ample opportunities for young researchers to present their most exciting unpublished data to a strong international audience. Apart from the outstanding scientific program, we hope that our virtual meeting will still provide opportunities to meet colleagues, build networks, and establish future collaborations.

We look forward to welcoming you all online for this exciting meeting.

The European Macrophage and Dendritic Cell Society (EMDS)

Each year the EDMS is holding an annual 2 day-meeting somewhere in Europe. The meetings are attended by 150-200 scientists from all over Europe and from overseas.

The meetings are run by individuals that volunteer for that task. Therefore every meeting has its specific flavour and thematic emphasis that is determined by the local organizing committee in collaboration with members of the EMDS council.
