Speculative Co-Design of Robots

Victor van den Bergh, Center for Children’s Speculative Design, US
David Robert, Center for Children’s Speculative Design, US
Nadezdha Zilberman, Tomsk State University, RU

We will introduce workshop participants to a framework for co-designing robots with children and adults that uses children’s imaginations as a starting point [3]. The presentation will share the processes and outcomes of three art and research programmes that have informed this approach. The instances to be discussed include an interactive exhibition and workshop held at a major US art museum (Peabody Essex Museum), a gallery exhibition at Harvard University, and an ongoing child-robot-interaction research study in Russia. The CRI research methods covered in this presentation will include C4CSD’s Children’s Openness to Interacting with Robots Scale (COIRS), a validated evaluation instrument currently fielded in CRI studies, as well as linguistic analysis methods used by Professor Zilberman’s in her CRI research with Russian children [4]. Recent developments of the International Archive of Children’s Imagined Robots will also be discussed.
