Why Collaborative Robots Must Be Social Actors

This position paper argues that we do not have much choice but to construe collaborative robots as social actors. Social cues, including emotional displays, serve coordination functions in human interaction and therefore have to be used, even by robots, in order for long-term collaboration to succeed.

Kerstin Fischer is professor for Language and Technology Interaction at the University of Southern Denmark. She teaches communication design, user studies and human-technology interaction, and her research concerns verbal human-robot interaction, the study of language and language learning using robots and issues of timing and contingency in human-robot interaction.
