Innovation and creativity in an authoritarian state: trends in Chinese education

Innovation and creativity have become essential buzzwords in China. At the same time, Xi Jinping tightens ideological control. How can these contradictory trends coexist? What are the consequences for the generation entering the labour market over the next few years?

 

Stig Thøgersen, dr. phil., is professor of China Studies at the Department of Global Studies, Aarhus University. He has published extensively on Chinese education and on political, social and cultural change in rural China. He recently finished a research project on Chinese students in Denmark.
