The emergence of a Chinese school of international relations theory: Opportunities and constraints?

The presentation aims at engaging in the on-going discussion on the emergence of a Chinese school of international relations in the context of China’ global rise. In an attempt to go beyond the consensual recognition that IR is historically and culturally rooted in and shaped by Eurocentrism, the speaker argues that economic success with Chinese characteristics offers China both opportunities and constraints in the struggle of establishing a Chinese school of IR. However, the constraints are not only cultural and historical legacies, but also some of the consequences brought about by China’s rise.
