Background

Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark are collaborating on a project to examine best environmental waste management practices in Arctic marine and coastal mining operations.

The project has conducted an inventory of Arctic marine and coastal mining operations. The inventory includes mining projects which have reached or passed the approval phase, and relies, to a large extent, on Environmental Impact Assessments and approved documents. The inventory includes mining operations which have an impact on the marine environment, ranging from coastal operations to land-based operations which discharge water, dust or underwater noise to the marine environment.

Results of the inventory will be presented at the workshop.

The workshop outcomes will be summarized in a proceedings report focusing on best marine mining practices for protecting the marine environment. Input from the talks (abstracts), breakout group insights and conference outcomes will be compiled and shared.

In addition, a review paper will be drafted for a scientific journal based on the outcomes of the workshop.

The workshop is sponsored by Ministry of Environment of Denmark; Environmental Agency for Mineral Resources and Activities, Government of Greenland, Aarhus University and the Government of Canada.

The workshop’s scientific committee includes:

  • Anders Mosbech (Aarhus University, Danish Center for Environment and Energy, Denmark)
  • Maureen Copley (Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Canada)
  • Janne Fritt-Rasmussen (Aarhus University, Danish Center for Environment and Energy, Denmark)
  • Libby Chunyk (Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Canada)
