Electromicrobiology is an interdisciplinary field of research to study electroactive microbes and their interactions with other microbes, minerals, electrodes, and the environment. Electroactive microbes have emerged as common and functionally important components of diverse ecosystems from sediments to soils, biofilms, and even the human body, as well as in sustainable biotechnologies such as bioremediation or biocatalysis.
Progress in (meta)genome analysis and structural biology, and the integration of electrochemistry and physical models of electron transfer is rapidly expanding the known diversity of molecules, mechanisms, microbes, and biogeochemical processes engaged in extracellular electron exchange.
Building on the success of the previous Electromicrobiology Conferences, it is once again time to get together for sharing the latest insights, addressing the knowledge gaps, establishing new collaborations, and discussing how to translate fundamental discoveries into solutions for the environment, biotechnology, or medicine:
We invite researchers of all career stages and backgrounds, including microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, physics, biomedical research, biogeochemistry, environmental sciences, and biotechnology, to join the 5th Electromicrobiology Conference (EM-27), June 2-4, 2027, in Aarhus, Denmark.
Following the success of previous editions, the 2027 conference will once again be preceded by the Early Career Scientist (ECS) Workshop, a two-day event designed specifically for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
ECS-27 serves as an introduction to the electromicrobiology conference, providing participants with hands-on experience in selected key techniques in electromicrobiology while fostering collaborative relationships with colleagues and peers in an informal and interactive environment.
