Resolving the Global Nitrogen Dilemma - Opportunities and Challenges

17th - 21st June 2024

The international N Workshop is an unique opportunity to bring together the contributions of researchers from all over the world.

In 2024, Aarhus University has the honor of hosting the next N Workshop. During five exciting days, we will work towards resolving the global nitrogen dilemma: how do we reconcile the need to increase N inputs to ensure crop productivity and human nutrition, while decreasing N losses leading to environmental pollution and associated threats to food security and ecosystem health?

We will adress these global issues in six regular and at least three special sessions, together with seven interesting keynotes and two roundtables in June 2024 in Aarhus, Denmark.

Organising Committee:

Diego Abalos (Aarhus University)

Jørgen Eivind Olesen (Aarhus University)

Klaus Butterbach-Bahl (Aarhus University)

Hanne Lakkenborg Kristensen (Aarhus University)

**NEWS**

We are pleased to announce that the XXIII N workshop in 2026 will take place in Sardinia, Italy.

The XXIII N workshop 2026 is being designed to address the complex nexus between N water, food, and energy at different scales, emphasising ecological transition and multiple dimensions of sustainability, including climatic, ecological, social, economic, and cultural aspects.
The Workshop will focus on emerging systemic challenges such as precision N management within the farm-to-fork food chain, N dynamics in drylands and wetlands ecosystems, croplands, livestock, forestry and agroforestry systems, the N-mediated coupling between social, economic and ecological processes, advanced strategies to apply nitrogen fertilisers in ways that reduce or avoid N losses and GHG emissions, especially nitrous oxide, even when increasing soil carbon through C-farming practices, and the NUE and N reuse from traditional and new recycled materials, will be among the pillars of the keynotes and related oral, poster and highly interactive sessions. The Workshop will also focus on indicators and decision support systems that can improve N management and characterise the evolution of N use at the farm and regional scales.
