Raya A. Jones, PhD, is a Reader at the School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University. Her recent research centres on the discourse of social robotics. Long term interests include Jungian, dialogical and narrative perspectives on the self. Her latest authored book is Personhood and Social Robotics (Routledge 2016). Earlier books include Jung, Psychology, Postmodernity (Routledge, 2007), The Child-School Interface (Cassell, 1995), and several edited volumes, of which the latest is Narratives of Individuation (Routledge, 2019).
On Human Freedom in a Posthuman Future: Sources of Dialogical Tensions
This paper considers challenges for conceptualising ‘culturally sustainable social robotics’. Approaching the relevant discourse from a critical distance, the discussion identifies dissonances among different positions and their associated moral claims, and points to some ambivalence inherent in the phrasing of the goal.
