How do we ensure children's voices in a digital era? Associate Professor at Aarhus University Stine Liv Johansen invites conference guests to join the Impact Tour hosted at DOKK1 the great architectural public library at Aarhus harbour.

Rethink children’s representation:

Stine Liv Johansen follows digital development closely through research on children and media. She is active in the Danish debate and policymaking regarding children and their online presence which provides an important research-based voice in the societal debate. Stine Liv Johansen believes in letting children voice their opinions and in listening and advocating for their point of view to be heard. In the process of doing so children’s perspectives can and should influence future academic studies as well as have impact on the industry that designs and distributes media content and platforms to children. By putting children’s perspectives on the agenda this Impact Tour invites conference guests as well as citizens to rethink and discuss how we ensure children’s voices in a digital context.

Children as a focus area:

DOKK1 is a multipurpose building located at Aarhus harbour and was established as a part of a municipal project called Urban Mediaspace which is the biggest construction project ever done by Aarhus council. DOKK1 houses the main public library in Aarhus and the local citizen service centre but in addition to this DOKK1 facilitates experiences and activities for citizens. Citizens can participate in events or use the facilities to immerse themselves in projects or studies, explore the artwork and installations as well as play on the playgrounds inside and outside the building. With its opening hours from 8 am to 10 pm, it composes activities for everyone no matter the citizens intended use and age. DOKK1 has a special aim to engage children and families through the many possibilities that the building has to offer, which is the reason why large parts of the building are designed with ‘play’ in mind so DOKK1 appeals to playing, learning, and sharing experiences and stories. This enables the opportunity to be active together or relax and enjoy the view overlooking the waterfront.

The Impact Tour:

Through this Impact Tour Stine Liv Johansen will host a debate to discuss how to best include children’s perspectives in aspects related to their digital presence. Relevant researchers and industry partners will be invited to the debate to rethink children’s impact. It will be possible to experience the debate as well as explore DOKK1’s manifold facilities, including MediaLabs in the IRIS project.
