Understand the success behind the Danish TV series Borgen when ECREA and associate professor at Aarhus University Jakob Isak Nielsen invites conference guests to join the Impact Tour hosted at the local art cinema East of Eden.

At East of Eden (Øst for Paradis), they focus on smaller and non-mainstream movies from all over the world. The cinema will be the setting for the Impact Tour, where Associate Professor at Aarhus University, Jakob Isak Nielsen, will lead a Q and A with a writer-creator, executive producer, and co-founder at Sam Productions Adam Price about the remarkable success – and controversy – of Borgen.

The TV success behind Borgen

If television series are like journeys, then Danish TV drama Borgen (“Government”) is indeed a remarkable – if not a unique – example with surprising twists and turns. The production of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) was mired in political controversy even before a single second was shot. The show persevered. No one at DR really thought that a public service drama on Danish coalition politics would find an international audience. It did. After a successful run of three seasons (DR, 2010-2013) and wide international circulation, Borgen came to stand as one of DR’s flagship productions.

Rethink Impact

Borgen was recently “re-booted” as a result of an unprecedented collaboration between Netflix and DR which – yet again – caused controversy amongst Danish politicians. This demonstrates how an international streaming service like Netflix and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation rethinks a collaboration between international and national media operators.

The Impact Tour at East of Eden

By joining the Impact Tour, the attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the remarkable success of Borgen. The tour will be structured as a Q and A session, where Jakob Isak Nielsen accompanied with a surprise guest will talk about the controversy surrounding Borgen as well as how it has created an international following.
