Josette A. Garnier

Josette A. Garnier is a Research Director at the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) in the field of Biogeochemistry of River Basins. Her main insterest lie within the land-to-sea continuums, water-agri-food systems and socio-ecological metabolism studies. She is currently working on the biogeochemical functioning of large watersheds, including the human activities in their basin (specifically, domestic waste waters and agriculture). Coupled models that she contributes to elaborate, allow to explore scenarios of changes in agricultural practices and systems, and to quantify the environmental impacts. This approach is currently used at various spatial scales (small territories, countries and European scales). Long term studies also helps determining past trajectories, useful for co-construction of scenarios.

Researchgate Profile

In her keynote “Towards food and energy self-sufficiency: different degree in circularity”, two scenarios of the agro-food and energy supply systems will be explored at the scale of Europe divided into 127 regions, for checking their biogeochemical feasibility. The first one, "agroecology" hypothesizes a close reconnection of cropping and livestock systems with no feed import and a partial reuse of human excreta. The second "radical sobriety" calls in addition for a complete overhaul of lifestyles. Both scenarios will be evaluated in terms of self-sufficiency and environmental burdens.
