Curitiba has been depicted as a model central city in terms of sustainability in Latin America (awarded Global Sustainalble City, 2010). However, the situation is not real if we take a closer look and/or if we analyse its case at the level of the metropolitan region. The talk departs from the work of Jeroen Klink to discuss aspects such as urban metropolitan governance, socio-spatial aspects and the economic and environmental conditions.
Joel Outtes, DPhil, is an Associate Professor at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where he is a Research Member of GEST (Group for the Study of Societies and Territories). As an architect and historian of Urban Planning, he examines historical and geographical issues, amongst other things within urban planning. In 2001, Prof. Outtes was named the Helen and John Best Research Fellow of the American Geographical Society Collection at the Golda Meir Library, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. An expert on urban studies in the light of cities becoming globally visible in the new economy, Prof. Outtes claims the debate on sustainability issues is more important than ever. Currently, some of his most important research focuses on the genesis of city planning in Brazil and Argentina, international urban institutions and the criticism of world-systems theory, a new research subject for him.
