Nordic Association for the Study of Contemporary Japanese Society 2024 Conference

May 23–24, 2024, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark

The Department of Global Studies at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark is hosting the 18th Annual NAJS Conference, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of NAJS. The conference will take place at the Department of Global Studies at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark. The conference will cover topics related to modern and contemporary Japanese society and culture, including politics and international relations, economy and business, sociology and anthropology, history, popular culture, literature, religion and art. Scholars at all career stages based in Scandinavia, Japan and beyond are welcome.

The format of the conference will consist of two keynote speakers, Akio Takahara and Manami Hori, but no further presentations. Prior to the conference, full papers will be distributed to participants, and the time (30 min) will then be used to facilitate intense discussion led by assigned discussants. The conference provides the opportunity, in a collegial, informal atmosphere, to receive ample feedback on participant’s research and unpublished papers both from specialists in their own field and from other disciplines.

If you have been selected as a participant, please submit your full paper to the emailed link.

Deadline for full papers: May 6, 2024 at 12:00 (midday)

The link for submission will be emailed to all confirmed participants by the end of April.

Please do contact raymond.yamamoto@cas.au.dk or au756931@cas.au.dk for any questions.

Guidelines for participation

At the annual NAJS Conference, priority will be given to full papers that presenters regard as ready, or nearly ready to be submitted for publication. Less developed research ideas, projects and work in progress can also be presented.

Since it is a prerequisite for participants to read all papers presented at the conference beforehand, all papers should be sent in by the deadline stated in the Call for Papers and on the conference homepage. The papers will then be made available as PDF files so that they can be downloaded well ahead of the conference.

Format

Since NAJS prioritizes discussion of and feedback on papers, no time will be given to the presenters to summarize their papers. The presenter is, however, allowed a maximum of five minutes to state what type of publication or audience he/she is aiming at and state special requests about the desired feedback. Thereafter, two discussants will be given five minutes each to bring up the points most worthy of discussion in the paper. The presenter is then given five minutes to respond before the floor is opened for everyone to comment. The chair of the session should see to it that focus is on major issues rather than details and that the time limit is kept.

Length of the paper

Manuscripts of 7,000 to 10,000 words are preferred but shorter papers can also be presented.
