Abraham Esteve Núñez

Abraham Esteve Núñez is a professor at the University of Alcalá, Spain. After his postdoctoral stays at UMass-Amherst (USA) and the Astrobiology Center (INTA / CSIC, Madrid), in 2009 he joined the Universidad de Alcalá through the Ramón y Cajal programme and since 2013 he has been a Professor in Chemical Engineering. He is also a researcher associated to IMDEA WATER.

Principal investigator of the Bioe Group, Abraham's scientific activity focuses on environmental biotechnology; specifically, in the use of electromicrobiology for bioremediation of water (urban and industrial) and natural environments at full scale, as well as the detection of pollutants.
The Bioe Group’s work spans:
Physiology and biochemistry of microbial electrogenesis: Understanding exocellular electron transfer, identifying electrogenic biomolecules in the bacterial membrane, optimizing the bacteria-electrode interaction using nanotechnology and studying microbial electrogenesis by systems biology approach. Environmental microbial electrogenesis: Studying microbial electrogenesis in natural environments, stimulating in situ bioremediation of pollutants, characterizing electrogenic populations in natural environments and investigating electrogenic bacteria-plant interaction.
Microbial electrogenesis and bioengineering: Bioreactor design for electrogenic wastewater treatments, desalination treatments using electrogenic technologies, construction of devices for storing and using bioelectricity and designing biosensor applications.
