Presentation and venue

The conference will be held at Aarhus University, Mathematics Department, Auditorium G2, in building 1532, ROOM 122 (Street address: Ny Munkegade 118, 8000 Aarhus C., Denmark).

The opening ceremony and the subsequent academic programme will take place in the Auditorium G2. Speakers are urged to submit their PowerPoint files to the symposium secretariat (Dennis Pedersen, dp@bio.au.dk) the day before their scheduled presentations.

Posters will be displayed in the hall called “Vandrehallen”, where they will be on display for the duration of the conference. There will be a dedicated poster sessions on Wednesday 17th of July between 1050–1200. The presenting authors who are in Aarhus are requested to stand by their posters and be available for questions and discussion during this session and those attending virtually are requested to be available to respond to email queries.

Meals

Buffet style lunch will be provided in the dining room of the Department of Mathematics throughout the duration of the conference (except 18th July). All food will be vegetarian. Coffee and tea will be served in the hall just outside the lecture room (Auditorium G2).

Excursions

Mini-excursions: On Tuesday 16th of July there will be three mini-excursions to the herbarium, greenhouses & botanical garden, and the research vessel Aurora. Please meet at the lecture room (Auditorium G2) at 0900–0930 for brief introductions to the mini-excursions. Conference attendants then have a choice of joining one of the three mini-excursions which will last from 0930–1200.

The mini-excursion to the herbarium will start with a five minute walk from the lecture room to building 1137. The tour will be guided by associate professor Wolf Eiserhardt, and herbarium curator Birgitte Bergmann will provide insight into the functioning of the herbarium and the ongoing digitization project. Scientist Expert Level at BKF Voradol Chamchumroon will explain the historical connection between the herbaria AAU and BKF. Return on foot for lunch at 1200.

The mini-excursion to the greenhouses and the botanic garden will start with a 20-minute walk from the lecture room and will be guided by associate professor Anders Barfod. The director of horticulture at Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden Piyakaset Suksathan, will explain the establishment of QSBG. Return to lunch at 1200 by 20 minutes walking.

The mini-excursion to the research vessel Aurora starts with 10 minutes transfer by van to Aarhus Harbour. This mini-excursion will be guided by associate professor emeritus Tomas Cedhagen who will discuss the history of the Thai-Danish research collaboration in marine science. Return to lunch at 1200 by vans.

Thursday 18th July 2024. Moesgaard Museum: 1000–1600 WHOLE DAY EXCURSIONS to Moesgård Museum. Please travel to the Moesgård Museum on Bus no. 19, departing from Aarhus bus terminal. Please be at the main entrance to the museum by 1000. At 1000–1015 there will be a presentation of the Moesgård Museum by its director, professor Mads Kähler Holst. This will be followed at 1015–1045 by a talk ‘Ethnographic research among the Thai Karen’ by associate professor Michael Gravers. This will be followed by a guided tour of the museum in smaller groups between 1045–1200. Lunch (1200–1300) will be in the Moesgård Museum cafeteria. 1300–1600 is the time for a walk to the old manor house, and the museum garden with the Thai house followed by visit to the bronze age cultural landscape guided by professor Mads Kähler Holst and associate professor Michael Gravers. Return to bus stop (no. 19) for return to Aarhus bus terminal.

Saturday 20th July 2024. Viking castle Fyrkat: One of several Danish circular castles built in the 900s when the Vikings were organizing into a national state under one king. This will be optional on Saturday July 20th, with participants covering the cost (amount ca 300 DKK or 60 USD depending on number of participants). The excursion will start at 0900 at the lecture room (G2) followed by a drive in a tourist bus for about one hour to the town of Hobro. Fyrkat is located in the outskirts of that city. We will spend two hours at the castle and associated museum. We will have lunch in the city of Hobro 1230–1330. Bus returns to Aarhus with a one hour stop in a managed mature beach forest (Fagus sylvatica), which is the zonal broad leaf forest of Denmark. Arrival at lecture room at Aarhus University at 1600.
