Saturday 20th July 2024 we will arrange an optional excursion, depending if enough people sign up (email to Henrik.balslev@bio.au.dk) to Viking castle Fyrkat. One of several Danish circular castles built in the 900s when the Vikings were organizing into a national state under one king. Participants will cover the cost (estimated ca 500 DKK or 75 USD depending on number of participants). The excursion will start at 0900 at the lecture room (G1) followed by a drive in a tourist bus for about one hour to the town of Hobro. Fyrkat is located in the outskirts of that city. We will spend two hours at the castle and associated museum. We will have lunch in the city of Hobro 1230–1330. Bus returns to Aarhus with a one hour stop in a managed mature beach forest (Fagus sylvatica), which is the zonal broad leaf forest of Denmark. Arrival at lecture room at Aarhus University at 1600.
