About the International Congress for Luther Research

Since the inaugural congress, held in 1956 in Aarhus, the International Congress for Luther Research has convened on a regular basis in various countries and continents. In 2022, the congress was held at the Californian Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. In 2017, the congress was hosted in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, while in 2012 it was held in Helsinki, Finland.

In between the congresses, an international Continuation Committee is at work. This committee determines the subjects to be discussed at the next Congress, as well as questions concerning the overall theme, the keynote lectures and the invitation of lecturers, and the seminars and the invitation of seminar leaders.

Currently, the Continuation Committee is co-chaired by Associate Professor PhD Anna Vind (Denmark) and Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Volker Leppin (USA).

The other members of the committee are:

Professor Dr. Mary Jane Haemig (USA), Professor Dr. Armin Kohnle (Germany), Professor Dr. Mark Mattes (USA), and Professor Dr. Marius T. Mjaaland (Norway), Professor Dr. Erik Herrmann (USA), Associate Professor Dr. Sini Mikkola (Finland), Professor Dr. Claus Schwambach (Brazil), and Professor Dr. Christopher Spehr (Germany).

For each Congress, a Local Committee is formed to welcome and host the participants. The Committee is responsible for the practical matters associated with the event, including registration, lodging, receptions, excursions, as well as registration for the seminars and arrangements for the short presentations. It also oversees other related services.

The Local Committee for the 15th Congress at Aarhus University, Denmark, includes the following members: Head of department, Associate Professor PhD Jakob Egeris Thorsen (AU), Assistant Professor PhD Mattias Sommer Bostrup (AU), Bishop Thomas Reinholdt Rasmussen (Aalborg), and Associate Professor PhD Jette Bendixen.
